It makes absolutely no sense to purchase a hydration pack if you don't know how to keep your hydration pack safe. Take care of your hydration pack and your hydration pack will take care of you. The following are some helpful hints and tips to help you maintain your hydration pack.
Mold growth and odors will appear if you don't clean your hydration pack on a regular basis.
Hangers:
The blue hangers displayed in the image on the right are not just another hanger. They really work well when you return home. It is exceptionally hard to dry the hydration pack out entirely unless they are totally open and have air to circulate within them. The hangers allow this to occur and they will be totally dry when using the hangers. The hangers are inserted into the hydration packs and they are hung wherever they can completely dry out.
Cleaning Procedure:
There are special brushes to clean the inside of the hydration pack as well as the tube. A special cleaning agent is also available to clean the inside. Baking soda can also be used (use 1 tablespoon) and let the water and baking soda mixture sit overnight. Rinse well with clean, warm water and hang up to dry using the special hangers.
Have fun backpacking and don't forget to take care of your hydration pack when you return from your hike.
