If you don't like switchbacks... don't hike to Bierstadt Lake. But the switchbacks are well worth the effort of hiking up to the lake. The mountain has a sharp pitch and that's why there are switchbacks as it too steep to hike straight up the mountain. Once you at the lake, have lunch, relax and then hike in a circle around the area. You will return to where you entered the lake and then the switchbacks won't seem as hard as you will be going downhill to where you started from.
