The White-tailed Ptarmigan can be found at the top of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. From spring through fall, the ptarmigan have a plumage with an intricate pattern of dark and pale brown, providing excellent camouflage against foliage and rocks. It is easier to listen for the bird and then trying to see and photograph them.
In winter and in the spring, White-tailed Ptarmigan are entirely white except for the dark eye and bill and they are impossible to see and photograph them.
This bird has been caught and banded for scientific reasons and I didn't see the banding until I previewed my photographs in my camera.
The bird is a fun bird to photograph as it's always a challenge to find and see them.
