The Great Blue Heron is a very elusive bird as you normally see the bird at a distance. Any attempt to try to get closer is usually met with failure as the bird is easily spooked and flies away. Also, many times the bird is seen as a very skinny bird while attempting to catch food as the feathers are not very majestic. The secret is to photograph the bird while it is walking, looking for food.
Sometimes, you are just lucky and happen to be at the right place at the right time... and also be close enough for a photograph.

I've seen plenty of Great Blue Herons, but unfortunately most of the birds at a considerable distance. You are entirely correct that the bird spooks extremely easily and any attempt to get closer will lead to the bird flying away. So, you have to be in a blind to possibly get this type of photograph. Were you in a blind as you didn't mention that in your post or we're you just lucky to be at the right place at the right time (as you mentioned)? Beautiful photo.
Bird photography is everything to me.
