If you can't photograph in your own backyard, then how do you expect to photograph anywhere else? Some people believe that it is the subject or the camera that makes a great
photograph. You can take a terrible photograph in Rocky Mountain National Park and you can take a terrific photograph in your own backyard. It is never the subject... it is always the photographer. The more you understand how a camera works and the more you become “as one” with the camera, the better the photographer you will become. When a great baseball player picks up their bat, it feels just right in his hands.

WHAT IS ON-THE-GO PHOTOGRAPHY?

Hiking with a 3 year old turned out to be quite a surprise! Philip’s daughter, her husband and their 3 year old son, Marty, came to visit us for a week. This was their first time here
in Estes Park. We didn’t know what to expect from a little 3 year old in the park or out on the trails. We started the week doing short walks like Estes Lake, Sprague Lake and Lily Lake. They are all .5 to 1.0 mile long, flat and easy to get around. There is a lot to see from the wildflowers to the lake and the mountains. We all enjoyed them and Little Marty did quite well…walking all by himself.

When we lived on the East Coast, we were avid sea kayakers and enjoyed leaving very early in the morning when there was absolutely no wind (referred to as a “sea of glass”). We have
also paddled down the coast of Kauai and Maui along side of the humpback whales, giant sea turtles, gray seals, harbor seals, etc. Now… what does sea kayaking have to do with On-The-Go Photography (OTG)? Well, there is a similarity. Years ago, we met and became good friends with Derek Hutchinson, who is considered to be the father of modern day kayaking.

In my younger days I made a lot of money through my photography even though it was a secondary job (my photography ran alongside my teaching career).
I suppose it's the dream of most photographers to make a living from the "hobby" and it can be done. The main problem as I see it is that the dream is to make money from the images we shoot for pleasure and think we are good at - nature, landscape, weddings etc etc. The problem there is that it is a very crowded market and the door isn't opened automatically for you. Whether we like it or not, whatever type of photography we do there are far better photographers out there doing the same type as shots.

The next day, we thought that we might “try” hiking up to Nymph Lake and Dream Lake. Little Marty got his little walking stick and his hat and was on his way. A Zip-Loc bag of cut-up
apples and some pretzels went a long way for encouragement. Next thing we knew, we were at Nymph Lake (which is about .5 miles) where we saw the beautiful pond lilies with pretty yellow flowers and spectacular views of Flattop and Hallett Peak. He loved walking around the lake and taking everything in. Should we try Dream Lake? It’s only .6 miles more. Why not!

About Allen Jaszcar of Allen Jaszcar Photography
|
|
Allen Jaszcar Photography was established in January of 2004. Allen began taking photographs seriously in the mid 1960s with a 1/2 frame 35mm camera in Puerto Rico. In 1968 Allen purchased his first full frame 35mm SLR and traveled in Europe, Iceland, Azores, Portugal, Scotland, Crete and Alaska before returning to Puerto Rico in 1969 to get married and raise a family. In 1976 Allen moved to Riverside, California where he has lived ever since. In August of 2003, prior to going on an Alaskan cruise, Allen purchased a Minolta Dimage 7hi and in December of 2005 upgraded to his present Nikon D200. Allen enjoys photographing sunsets and sunrises, outdoor photographs highlighted with shadows, macro photography and black and white photography in both digital and film. Allen uses a Nikon N90S and Kodak Tri-X 400 or Ilford XP2 for black and white film photography. Allen then scans the negatives on an Epson 4180 Scanner converting them to digital format for editing. You can see some of Allen's photography here on his gallery or on his website at www.adjphotography.com. Enjoy viewing Allen's photographs and he requests that you leave visitor comments before you leave. The photo on the right is Allen's signature photograph ''Harbor Sunset'' taken in San Diego with his Minolta Dimage 7hi in 2004.
