I was idling the SUV's engine keeping a snail's pace along Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge(NWR) loop road. It was early in the morning as I made my way around the circuit for Images © Outdoor Eyes the first time that day scouting for photographic opportunities. To my right I spotted an Anhinga wading a small pool along the side of the road. Anhingas are not uncommon at Merritt but this one was struggling to down a foot-long snake it had captured! What a photographic opportunity had presented itself. I quickly pulled to the side of the road and shut down the engine. So far so good: the Anhinga was still struggling with its breakfast.

I chose the page in the larger book that has a photo and I had enough room to add another note to the Ice Crystals after I shot this. I learned that those Ice Crystals only form as Images © Outdoor Eyes Needles like that at -5 degrees C. You can see the difference between the large and small book. Every page is different. I even paste other things in at times. I added a sepia postcard I made as well. This is a good way to contact friends and might be a very good way to keep clients in the loop of your new work or other plans.

    HYPOTHERMIA

HOW TO CHOOSE A CAMPING STOVE
Text & Photographs By Philip Tulin

Too much cold is just as dangerous as too much heat, particularly if it leads to hypothermia. If you are trekking at high altitudes or simply taking a long bus trip over mountains, Images © Outdoor Eyes particularly at night, be prepared. In the Himalayas, you should always be prepared for cold, wet or windy conditions even if you're just out walking or hitching. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it and the core temperature of the body falls. It is surprisingly easy to progress from very cold to dangerously cold due to a combination of wind, wet clothing, fatigue and hunger, even if the air temperature is above freezing.

In purchasing equipment for the outdoors, I always use the same thought process. How often am I going to upgrade my equipment based on the new radical improvements that the Images © Outdoor Eyes manufacturer will come out with? How long before my existing equipment will become obsolete and I will have to replace it? How long will it be before I have a disadvantage with my existing equipment? When the time came to choose a camping stove, I decided that I would choose the best camping stove that I could afford based on the use of the camping stove.

Last September during the Elk Rut, we were standing next to about a dozen photographers who were using 800mm (or greater) lenses on tripods. We were not using tripods so we could move Images © Outdoor Eyes about quite easily. After about an hour, one photographer asked what we were using for equipment. We showed him our camera and then said, “Would you like to see some of the pictures from our portfolio that is in the car?”

    HOW TO REALLY GET AHEAD

    HOW TO CHOOSE HIKING POLES
Text & Photographs By Philip Tulin

The photography field becomes more competitive daily. As a freelance photographer, you need to make sure people know who you are and what you are capable of. Unfortunately, most of us Images © Outdoor Eyes don't have a large advertising budget to get the word out. The good news is that with a little time, some practice and a little imagination, you can develop a very strong marketing campaign at little to no cost. As a professional, you are an expert and using that to your advantage will have a huge impact on your success. To establish yourself as a local expert, consider teaching local workshops, offering classes through a community college or the University's continuing education system, start a club.
HOW TO REALLY GET AHEAD. »

Two sticks are better than one on the trail. Using a pair of hiking poles or trekking poles gives you balance and takes more stress off the lower body joints. The poles are designed to Images © Outdoor Eyes provide extra stability and to spread the load on your legs and on your arms. You end up in better shape since the poles burn additional calories. The grips and straps are designed so you can push down on them to assist yourself on the trail, but also for quick release if the pole gets stuck between rocks or roots.
