OUTDOOR EYES PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

Too much cold is just as dangerous as too much heat, particularly if it leads to hypothermia. If you are trekking at high altitudes or simply taking a long bus trip over mountains, particularly at night, be
prepared. In the Himalayas you should always be prepared for cold, wet or windy conditions even if you're just out walking or hitching. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it and the core temperature of the body falls.

I am quite often asked for my opinions on arts-related web sites (mostly by photographers), and I tend to make the same observations over and over. So, I thought I’d collect them together in case they are helpful to anyone else wanting to set up a site to promote or sell their art works. Get attention quickly. You really need to pack a punch with the home page, and grab people's interest in the few seconds they first scan the page. That doesn't necessarily mean over-the-top design and flashy stuff, but definitely some captivating words and images.

If you do see a bear, keep your distance. What's a safe buffer? Various national parks suggest - or require - anywhere from 100 yards to ¼ mile from bears. Now you know why you bought that great telephoto
lens or spotting scope! Ask about local guidelines when visiting parks or similar areas. What should you do if you find yourself in a potential conflict with a bear? Experts have different advice about dealing with black vs. grizzly bears, so check with rangers or wildlife officials in the area you're visiting. In recent years there's been a lot of publicity - and misconceptions - about bear pepper spray.

LIGHTWEIGHT BACKPACKING

ARMCHAIR PHOTOGRAPHY

Backpacking lightweight is not a new concept. Since the advent of what we consider backcountry hiking, there have been those who have headed into the backcountry with little more to accompany them than a
blanket and a little food. Indeed, anyone who has hiked for an extended period of time knows the value of lightening the weight one carries. A lighter backpack can not only help propel one up that hill, or help ones knees on the backside of that hill, but also can help to enjoy the overall venture even more. Before I began my lightweight change, I would hike just to get there. Now - with less weight - I can actually hike just to hike.

Sometimes one can't get outdoors but still want to take pictures of animals and birds. For instance, sometimes I can't move too well so I'm confined to a chair by the window. I have my camera near me on a
table, bird feeders about 10 feet from the window, and a stump set up 3 feet from the window. Sometimes I will have the camera on a tripod, with a remote cord, set up near the window, prefocused. When a bird lands on the stump and I know it is in the prefocused spot, I start taking pictures with the remote cord. I don't think one has to be outdoors to get outdoor shots.

HOW TO CHOOSE A MULTI-USE TOOL

You should never hike or backpack without a multi-use tool even if you are out on the trail for only a couple of hours. You never know when you will need one for repairs or just to remove a splinter from your
hand. You have several options to consider: a knife or a multi-use tool. Purchase the best multi-tool or knife that you can afford as you won't regret spending the extra money. Someday, one of the features will make a big difference on the trail. Some knives and multi-use tools are heavy and bulky so choose the lightest/smallest tool that will fit your needs.

Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is situated just outside of Gatlinburg, Tn. The road is approximately 7 miles long, but traverses many distinct areas. If light is good this area may take all morning to explore and
photograph. The first area to stop at is the Noah "Bud" Ogle Place. Mature Dogwood trees give this cabin the charm many photographers return to year after year. Pre-dawn or early morning light is best for this cabin. As you continue along the motor nature trail you may wish to hike the 1.2 miles to Grotto Falls. Many compositions for photography of this falls can be accomplished.
